Imelda May

Born in Dublin and raised in the Liberties, Imelda May is a unique vocal talent, one whose gift lies outside the normal order of pop culture time and trends. She is an Irish superstar and is probably the most popular singer in Ireland today.
She is unmistakable both in her music (a fusion of surf guitars, blues and rockabilly that wouldn’t be out of place in a David Lynch film) and her style, with a solitary curl and shock of blonde in her jet black hair.

Inspired by the sounds of vocal jazz à la Billie Holiday and the sound and looks of rockabilly, Imelda began performing with the UK swing outfit Blue Harlem, and released a handful of independent CDs before scoring attention in 2007 with the release of her more official debut,’ Love Tattoo’.

The album, featuring her strong backing band comprised of Dave Priseman, Darrell Higham, Al Gare, and Steve Rushton, was critically and commercially well received, leading to some high-profile live gigs, including hitting the road with Jools Holland. At home, the ‘Love Tattoo’, album went Triple Platinum and Imelda’s rise to stardom began.

In 2009, Imelda knocked Bruce Springsteen off Number One to become the first female Irish artist to top the Irish album charts since Mary Black 20 years ago. She then went on to win Female Artist of the Year at the Irish Meteor Awards.
Despite album successes, Imelda continues to tour, playing to over 400 000 people in 8 countries across Europe and the US – including a US tour with Jamie Cullum.

She has shared a stage with Eric Clapton, Chuck Berry, David Gilmour, Sharon Shannon, Jeff Beck, Shane MacGowan, Kirsty McCall, Van Morrison, Lionel Richie, Wanda Jackson, Paul Brady, Meatloaf and more.
Imelda has just released her third chart-topping hit album ‘Tribal’. Described as her punchiest yet, it now means she is the only female Irish artist ever to record three successive Number One albums.
